The story of how I came to do this blog

Back in 2004 I posted regularly on an online forum dedicated to The Libertines. Back then, if you were 17 and from a Middle England town, where your friends weren't into the same music as you, online band forums were the place to be (ironically this cultural phenomenon is cemented into the history books with the lyric from 'I'm Alright Me'). One of the girls who was part of the community sent me a copy of the first Cribs record. My love, adoration and respect for the band and its music was realised instantly. This was my band.

I saw the band many times around spring/summer of 2005 – the same time I was doing my a-levels, gigging, boozing for the first time and meeting legions of wonderful girls. The first two Cribs albums were the soundtrack to these exciting years of self discovery. This period was crowned with a sensational gig in Northampton (my home town) at the Soundhaus in June 2005. There was about 20 people in the room and the band gave a belting performance. You could feel they were in a bad mood and had something to prove. I got the impression they were pissed off that loads of other shitey bands were progressing with their musical career and The Cribs, in their view, weren’t. This of course was nonsense and they put on a wicked gig - one of the best I've ever experienced. I remember Ryan asking ‘has anyone got any requests?’ –almost as if he was testing the water to see if anyone there knew their songs. I shouted out ‘Things you should be knowing’ and hey, they played it. That was a buzz.

I saw them plenty of times over the next few years. I was at their first headline show at Mean Fiddler, December 06  - their gig on the main stage at Reading 07 - the first night of Cribsmas – to name a few. But I eventually gave up a bit during the Johnny Marr era. My feeling was that Johhny Marr is the most melodic guitar player ever but the boys voices aren’t a strong fit for super melodic music. It didn’t work. Nevertheless, I was very impressed with the return to form with Belly Of The Brazen Bull. I got a couple of free tickets to see them at 100 Club as part of Converse ‘Get Dirty’ gigs in April 2013. The gig was a complete return to form – Christ – me at 25 and them at 32 – nothing had changed in terms of the shared passion for The Cribs music.

My renewed enthusiasm for the band got me thinking about some old guitar tabs I used to post on The Cribs forum and ultimate-guitar.com (we were all on loads of different forums back then – indie wasn’t cool so bedrooms and studies across the land became a network of shrines to the music we loved). I was shocked to see that my tab of Another Number that was posted when I was 17, holed up in my bedroom in April 2005, had received 15,000 views. This was a hugely humbling realisation. When I started playing guitar I got so damn frustrated that I could not find tabs of the bands I loved. I didn’t want to learn to play the guitar by playing Metallica, Guns N Roses or any of that shite. So I decided then that if I was ever successful after hours of fiddling, and I figured out a song or two, that I would tab it a share it with the world. As far as I was concerned, that’s what the internet is for – spreading the word.

I was reminded of the joy of playing guitar at 17 and the ambitions we have at that age. So I have decided to stay true to my 17 year old guitar playing ethic and have set up this blog to tab to house all of the other Cribs songs I know how to play. I want to carry on my tradition and hope that someone somewhere gets a kick out of learning a song they love, but didn’t know how to play otherwise. I will be finishing off my old tabs and doing new ones. These wont be in any order – just the songs I think have interesting guitar parts. I will be posting a tab a week (ambitious target now that I am 26 and have a proper job in London – where’s the rock and roll in that?). One love. Stu x
